Couple more questions [Jul. 17th, 2011|11:18 am]

Thanks so much for your housing help! Now I have a few questions about school itself...
Of the four classes I'm registered for, only one has assigned textbooks so far. Do classes normally not have textbooks, or will the other ones have required textbooks closer to class time?
Do most people take their laptops to class with them? Will I need to?
There's a huge printing allowance for LIS students, am I really going to be writing 1500 pages worth of papers?
And are the IU clubs really for undergraduates (the non-LIS specific ones), or can grad students join/feel comfortable in them?
Thanks so much!

I don't know if anyone will ever see this, but...
I'm starting at IU this fall (yay!), and so I'm looking around at apartments online. Can anyone recommend any that are either close to campus or on the bus line (I won't have a car), that aren't too expensive? Utilities - especially internet - included are a plus. Studios or one-bedrooms, I don't want a roommate.

Obscene user content [Sep. 22nd, 2010|05:15 pm]

Who is LJ user "carrienewsome"??  Whomever this is, I'm going to report that user for posting inappropriate content to the IU SLIS community.

Free Amazon Prime for students [Aug. 9th, 2010|04:19 am]

Amazon is currently giving free 1 year memberships to Amazon Prime (free 2 day shipping, $3.99 overnight shipping) to current students with a .edu email address: http://www.amazon.com/gp/student/signup/info I'm not sure how long they're offering this (it doesn't say on the site).

Just thought i'd give fellow students the heads up on this in case you haven't heard about it yet. This is going to save me a ton on shipping textbooks this year!

Number four in this article is a library story I never heard before. Granted, it is Cracked, but the fundamental elements should be accurate.

Looking for a room August '10 [Mar. 9th, 2010|06:23 am]

Hey fellow SLISians!

I was just regretfully informed that my landlord is moving back into my house this August, which normally wouldn't be a huge problem except that I'm allergic to his cat.  The LJ community seemed a safer bet than craigslist this early in the game, because I'd like to live with people with similar interests and temperament.  Asking for people in SLIS without cats is a long shot, for sure, but hopefully some of you fit the bill.

Ideally, I'd like to get as close to my current situation as possible, but everything's negotiable if the room-mates are a match.  I'm currently paying $325+util/month for a room in a nice house in a residential neighborhood, with other grad students who don't party and keep the place tidy.  Looking for a nerdy/geeky household without pets/explosions(unless they're for Science! which is always a good excuse)/smoking/nightly parties/etc.  I like to cook (and will happily cook for you, future housemates!), so a clean kitchen with some space is preferable.

If you like video games, Science!, reading, hiking, building LEGO masterpieces, cooking, etc., we'll probably get along marvelously.

I'm interested in the School Media certificate, but it sure doesn't give a lot of room for electives. Would it be better to just do that or just get a lot of reference electives? Im totally cool with schools or public.

Has anyone taken foreign language classes while completing your MLS? Impossible?

[music |Matt White - Best Days | Powered by Last.fm]

Hey everyone! New member, I'm an admitted SLIS Grad Student for Fall, 2009.

I'm enrolling for classes right now, and I was wondering what a typical, comfortable course load would be? 9 hours is what the catalog says, but would 12 be doable?

Thanks for your help!
